Well it looks like Warner Bros. is looking to bring back The Matrix franchise.
The Hollywood Reporter have stated that nothing has been confirmed as of yet and that Warner Bros. are still in early talks to bring back the franchise. Zak Penn who you may know for X-Men: The Last Stand and Last Action Hero is on board to write. There are also some sources stating that Michael B. Jordan is being considered to star, but it is still uncertain whether the Wachowskis, who created The Matrix franchise are going be returning.
Now many are stating that this is a reboot but this may not be a straight reboot and may actually instead just be a new fresh start for The Matrix, just like the way Lucasfilm did with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
There is a possibility that this new Matrix film takes place a couple of years after The Matrix Revolution and explores a new character, new stories and possibly having Neo train someone just the way Morpheus trained him. Hollywood Reporter suggested that the film could possibly be a prequel and that it could focus on a younger Morpheus and how he came to discovering the Matrix himself.
It hasn’t been quite long ago since Keanu Reeves, who played Neo in The Matrix films commented to several outlets that he’d be open to returning to the franchise.
“The Wachowskis would have to be involved,” Reeves told Yahoo Movies. “They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not? People die, stories don’t. People in stories don’t.”
The Matrix films changed the whole cinema experience, with the franchise grossing $1.5 billion worldwide. Now what if Warner Bros. are actually planning on creating a Matrix Cinematic Universe with not only new mainstream Matrix films following the story of Neo, but also having additional films exploring key character backgrounds such as Morpheus or Trinity, just like the way LucasFilm are doing with their Star Wars films, making main films and also making anthology films alongside exploring different stories and characters.
