With a successful release and meeting every single fan’s expectations, X Men: Days of the Future Past was a big hit in 2014 making us all excited to see what happens next.
So it’s finally 2016 and 20th Century Fox Studios will be releasing the next installment in the X Men franchise “X Men: Apocalypse”, the film which almost every Marvel and X Men fan has been waiting to see. The film takes place a few years after the events of “Days of the Future Past” with the X Men now facing their most toughest challenge yet as they experience the emergence of the world’s first mutant, Apocalypse, the X-Men must unite to defeat his extinction level plan.
This year’s X Men film was known by many fans as the film to complete the prequel trilogy and link directly to the original X Men trilogy ‘s first film X Men (2000), but since the events of Days of the Future Past we now know that after the 80s-based Apocalypse events Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg have the choice to ditch the “one movie per decade” formula they’d set up and do a bunch of movies set in the 90s or just go and reboot.
With all the alternate universe ideas and the messy continuity problems all the X-Men films were creating I think they should just leave the X Men franchise by completing the prequel trilogy with this year’s X Men: Apocalypse and linking it to the X Men film which came out in 2000 and then just moving forward and making a “X Force” and “Deadpool” films.
The writer and producer of the X Men films Simon Kinberg told Digital Spy:
“Everything is an alternate timeline at this point, but the one thing we have established is the end of Days of Future Past, where Wolverine wakes up in the future mansion – that is the destination of this new timeline. So ultimately they are going to become who you see at the end of that movie. This does give the films both a lot more freedom but also means that certain characters have to survive. We see Professor X, Jean Grey, Scott Summers, Hank McCoy, Rogue, Iceman, Kitty Pryde, Wolverine—so a lot of characters are pretty safe. Assuming we don’t get another alternate universe. But it also means that everyone new has uncertain futures.”
Director Bryan Singer looks most likely to be staying with the X Men franchise after saying:
“I love these characters. I want to be the guy to pick young Storm, and Jean, and I want to be the guy to pick who Apocalypse is. And to take Magneto into this different place in [his] life, and to take Raven into this different place in her life. And I want to be the guy to take Xavier’s hair off! That’s me! I don’t want anyone else to do that.”
Hugh Jackman also looks a possibility after Producer Simon Kinberg commented on what they would do after Wolverine 3 saying: “either we would try to entice Hugh to come back and eat more chicken and work out for a few months, or we would have to figure out a creative way to move forward. Honestly, I can’t imagine anybody else playing the part.”
The future of the X Men Cinematic Universe does look bright with great films set to be released over the next few years such as Deadpool, X MEN: Apocalypse, The Gambit, Wolverine 3, New Mutants and possibly more.
